INSCRIPTION for an OBELISK.

WHEN Rome's bold tons o'er trembling
kingdoms flew,
And in their thriumphs conquer'd monarchs

' drew, • ■ . , .

-Bright fon of fame! Cara&acus arofe.
And pour'd his vengeance on fair freedom's
foes;

In Britifh breads rcnew'd the glorious flame,
To live in freedom, or to die with fame ;
Bv him infpir'd they dar'd the dreadful! war,
And taught intrepid Rome at lenght to fear;
Victorious oft they drench'd the thirfiy plain
With the rich blood of Roman hero's fl.-iin;
And when their chief, by a bafe queen betray'd,

aid

Fe't Romes dire chains upon his dioiilders 1
Around this facred (pot their banners rofe,
And frown'd defiance on th' invading foes;
In vain to drive them hence Odcrius try'd
And when he could not conquer, grieved and
died.

Then Britons venerate the facred ground
Where fainting Libertv a refuge found;
Here the foundation of her reign file laid.
Which flour ifli'd fair, and o\r the kingdoms
fpread.

Oh may the goddefs dil benignant (mile,
And with her pieflncp ever blefs this Ifle;
May Britain's Sons adoie her lovely name,
And wifely chcrifli her infpiring flame !
•Then dlall no foreign foe, nor tyrant's hand,
Dcf.ite the glories of this happy land.
