My dear friend
While in Munich last summer I made the acquaintance
of Frau von Bartels, the wife of ^-distinguished artist, Professor
von Bartels. For some years Frau von Bartels has been engaged in
■ v
researches of the famous Bronze Liver of Piacenza, and has reached
the conclusion that this remarkable object embodies an elaborate
symbollism. I was at first sceptically disposed regarding her
theories, but on going deeper into them, I felt that her main
thesis was correct. The weakness of her explanations was the
necessity of entering on the thorny field of Etruscan, and at my
suggestion she has cut out of a paper that she has prepared,
■3
embodying her views, as much as possible the reference^ to Etruscan
The title of her paper is " Die Symbolik der Bronzeleber von
Piacenza”, and it is, I think, of a kind well adapted for the
*Archiv fur die Religionswissenschaft. The question is, whether
you would be willing to have Frau von Bartels submit the manuscript
to the editorial board of the Archiv, of which you are a member.
I have offered to write a short prefatory note giving my reasons
for thinking that the views of Frau von Bartels ought to be brought
to the attention of scholars
She has not been able to leave
