Mount Hamilton, May 15, 1906.

Dear Professor Wolf:
Your postal card is just here,
and it gives me great pleasure to say that all goes
well with the Observatory and its people. The earth-
quake was very severe, but fortunately the earth move-
ments, though of great amplitude, were slow, and the
buildings and instruments had time to adjust themselves.
Dr. Aitken, one of the editors of the A.S.P. Publi-
cations, says that he will be very much pleased to re-
ceive a copy of your seismograph record complete with
times and any other data that you may care to add.
The earthquake and lire were a great disaster to
California, More than half the people of the state
and more than half the wealth are within fifty miles
of San Francisco. Serious earthquake damages extended
nearly 200 miles northward from San Francisco and fully
100 miles southward, but did not reach more than 50
miles inland. The income of the University of Cali-

fornia for several years will probably be reduced
