Dear Professor Wolf:
It is with deep regret that we have
learned of the impossibility of your coming to
California to receive in person the Bruce Medal;
it would have been a pleasure to have placed that
in your own hands. But the deeper regret lies in
the fact that we shall not see you here among us,
where we might talk of many things; and especially
in that ill health prevents your taking so long a
j ourney.
You know, doubtless, that the award
of the Bruce Medal is made by the Directors of
the Astronomical Society of the Pacific on the
nomination of the Directors of six of the great
observatories in several different countries.
The Society, in large measure, acts as a trustee
in expressing the responsible opinion of scienti-
fic colleagues of those to whom the award is made.
Because our own position in making the award is
so largely impersonal, we feel the freer in ex-
tending to you our sincere and hearty congratu-
lations on this fine recognition of what you have
accomplished. In this I speak both for myself and
for all the officers of the Society. With our
very genuine appreciation of your long years of
active and valuable service goes too the earnest
hope for renewed health and many more years of
successful investigation.
With kindest regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
President
Astronomical Society of the Pacific
