AMERICAN

GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY- NEW YORK

My dear Professor Hettner:

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the
Council of the American Geographical Society has voted to
award you the Cullum Geographical Gold Medal for 1929. This
medal has not been awarded for several years because we
wished to award it simultaneously to scholars in several
different countries. You will therefore see in the printed
announcement that it has been awarded to three persons be-
sides yourself: Dr. Hugh Robert Mill, Scott Polar Research
1 Institute, Cambridge, England; Professor Jean Brunhes,
College de France, Paris; Professor Jules de Schokalsky,
Russian Geographical Society, Leningrad.

In order that you ma^ see the list of past recipients
I am sending you herewith a booklet which also describes the
medal and gives other interesting details. At a later time
I shall communicate with you about the presentation of the
medal which will be arranged with attention to your convenience.
A notice of the honors awarded by the Society is being sent to
the leading scientific journals and geographical societies.
The first notice will probably appear in Science within a few
weeks.

It is a great satisfaction to address you on so
pleasant a topic and to extend the Society's best wishes for
the new year.
Cordially,

(Isaiah Bowman)
Director

Professor Alfred Hettner,
Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat,
Heidelberg, Germany.
