The naiads were said to be Madame (Duchesse) de Polignac, Madame (Duchesse)
de Guiche, and Mademoiselle Julie Lebrun, the painter’s daughter.

Marie Antoinette. Large portrait. 1779. Full length, standing in a room at Versailles.
Light blue satin dress, huge panier, elaborate tucks, frills, gold fringe and tassels. Low
neck. Blue headdress with feathers. Court train of blue velvet with gold fleur-de-lis.
Table with red cloth to right, whereon is a vase of flowers, and a crown on a blue cushion
with gold fleur-de-lis. Pearl necklace.
Sent to the Empress Maria Theresa. Hofburg, Vienna.
- The same. Four replicas of above. 1779-1780. (One a present from Marie Antoinette
to the Empress of Russia ; one for the French queen herself, and two for M. and Madame
de Vergennes, he being the Foreign Minister of Louis XVI at that time.) The picture
now at Versailles, and another belonging to the French National Collection, are pre-
sumably two of these four. Neither of these has the necklace shown in the original
painting.

year, according to the artist.
