The present Catalogue contains a collection of Musical books
limited in number but rieh in rare and interesting works. It
comprises part of the Library of Don Federico Olmeda, pres-
byter and musical conductor at the cathedral of Burgos, known
as author of some highly appreciated works on the ecclesiastical
singing in Spain and the Castilian populär music, and some other
private property.
Besides fine liturgical Manuscripts of the 13th, I4th, and i5th
Century on vellum the collection contains numerous early printed
works, among which some of the finest examples of liturgical printing
in general. There is a special division devoted to Spanish music,
comprising 85 books and manuscripts including many rare pieces,
while of modern Composers particularly Beethoven and Wagner are
represented by three and two exceedingly important original com-
positions respectively.
It is sufficiently known that old books on music are very
scarce, and of the editions of the i6th Century it would in many
cases be almost impossible to secure all the parts containing a
different voice each, which compose these works, and here it is
where the chief value of this collection lies, as nearly all the
books offered here, as f. i. those of Giov. Contini, P. Giovanelli, Nie.
Gombert, C. P. J. de Latre, Martin Peu d’Argent, Giov. Pelestrina,
Cipriano de Rore, to mention some names only, contain all the
different voices.
Particular mention deserve furthermore the Opus Novum
of Orlando di Lasso, 5 vols, Munich, Adam Berg, 1573—76 in
splendid old bindings, a complete copy whereof has not been in
the market for decades, Martin Peu d’Argent’s Sacrae Can-
ti on es, all the five voices, an equally complete copy has perhaps
never been in the market, the Pontificale Romanum, Rome,
Stephan Planck, 1485, an important incunable of music-printing, the
Passiones Benedictiones, Plasencia, Didacus di Cordova, 1536,
one of the finest and rarest liturgical impressions of Spain, and at
the same time the first book printed at Plasencia, the Missale
Tarraconese of 1499, the ;only copy that has been preserved,
and many others.
