The first review of Germany which criticised leading Personalities and general
conditions of the political and economic world in a public way, notwithstanding the
very strict censorship prevailing at the time. The review was issued during the years
1782—93 and had an extraordinarily great influence over the whole of Europe. An
attempt at continuating the periodical was rigidly suppressed.
The review is of outstanding American interest containing as it
does no less than 37 most interesting contributions to America, 28 of which relate to
the United States of North-America. The articles deal with the War of Independence
(vol. II, 4, 5, no. 1); German emigration to North-America (XVI, 61, 16) and to Pen-
sylvania (VI, 22/23); (XII, 48, 44); ode on the liberty of America (IV, 13, 11 and VI,
24, 62); statistics of the inhabitants of New York (XII, 47, 34) and Pensylvania (XVIII,
66 , 27); Constitution of the Iroquois (Oneida, XVIII, 69, 15) and so on.
Of a special interest is the calculation made of the losses suf-
fered by German troops during the American War of Independence (VI, 24,
64), an account of the Hessian army indicating the troops sent to America
on the behal.f of England (VI, 24 , 49).
In addition there are many articles on American commerce, monetary System,
paper-money (VII, 28, 38 p. 425; VIII, 31, 44; X, 40, 49; XII, 47, 34; XIII, 49, 12;
XIV, 53, 7; XV, 59 , 36—37; XV, 60, 56; XVI, 63, 41; XVII, 66, 31; XVIII, 72, 48);
Periodicals (XVII, 66, 30); Fights with Indian natives (XVI, 63, 40); Negros in Danish
West-India (XVII, 66, 22); uproar of the Negroes at St. Domingo (XIII, 49, 12 and
XVII, 65, 12). News from Canada; fishing (X, 38, 18); Rio de Janeiro (II, 6, 22);
J. H. Böhm, commander of the Brazilian forces (II, 8, 70) and so on.
Needless to say that this interesting set embodies a large material concerning
European civilisation at the end of the 18th Century touching so highly interesting
things as the then fashionable watering-places, ascents of balloons (Blanchard),
banking, manufactories, to mention only some chief features.
The sectional Indices mentioned on the title-pages of vol. 6, 12 and 18 are missing.
