Collatlon: 5 unn. 11., 85 numb. 11. (really 86, 1. 19 being counted twice), 1 unn. 1.
A Mexican printing of the utmost rarity of which I am able to
trace only one single copy to have come on the market since the Ramirez sale (1880).
While of the Camino del Cielo and the Primera parte del Sermonario by the same
author, a very few and for the most part conslderably time-worth copies have here
and there been announced in public sabs, there is no record at all to this effect of the
present manual. The reason for this extreme rarity lies evidently in the fact that this
book wat intended for daily use. It was therefore printed in a very small size
(88 : 135 mm.) to fit into everyman’s pocket. Thus it was particularly Hable to the
wear and tear in the hands of the West-Indian Missionaries. In consideration of these
facts the good preservation of the booklet is to be wondered at. There is some wor-
ming in the lower margin in the middle of the book, the title-page is mounted and
the outer bottom corner of he last leaf (tabla) has been repaired, causing some letters,
to be carefully supplied in manuscript. At the beginning there are some traces of
waterstains. Otherwise the book is in a very good condition. The title-page and the
fifth unnumb. leaf bear some old inscriptions.
According to Beristain y Souza Father Martin Leon was born in New Spain (pro-
vince of Santiago). He entered the Dominican Order in Mexico, where he professed on
the 28th of October 1574. „Fuß sapientisimo y elocuentisimo en el idioma mexicano y
muy dedicado a la salud espiritual de los Indios.“
