FRANCESCO LAURANA
SCULPTOR, architect, and medallist, born in Dalmatia, probably at Zara, about
1420-5. Came to Italy, perhaps to work under Brunelleschi, c. 1444. Associated with
Domenico Gaggini at Florence and Genoa. First mentioned 31 Jan. 1458 at Naples,
where he was largely responsible for sculpture, perhaps also for design, of the Triumphal
Arch. He left Naples probably about 1460, when Ferdinand’s cause seemed lost; was
in France from then until about 1466, when he went to Sicily, where he worked until
1471 or later. He appeared again in Naples in 1474; returned to France, where he is
mentioned in Nov. 1477. He last appears in a document of 10 Nov. 1500, and must
have died before 12 Mar. 1502. His dated medals are of 1461, 1463, 1464, 1466.
As a medallist he is slightly superior to Pietro da Milano, but he understood the
technical side of his art as little as his colleague.
