Sarzanella was employed on diplomatic service by the
Estensi. This then was doubtless made at Ferrara, where
Sarzanella was present in 1463. Observe the resemblance
to the smaller Carbone medal in the signature, and to the
Pendaglia in treatment of the bust.

According to Foville this medal shows the influence of
Lysippus and commemorates the death of Carbone in 1485
(sic: the date is usually given as 1482). The influence of
Lysippus is not apparent to me; and in age I can see little
difference from the other portrait. Probably Sperandio
made this medal after his arrival at Ferrara, and the laurea-
tion of 1464 was an excuse for a second medal.
The obverse inscription is from a poem addressed to
Carbone by Tito Vespasiano Strozzi (Erot. lib. iiii, p. 49 v°,
Ven. 1513).

Carbone received a wreath from Pius II at Bologna in
1464, and from Frederick III at Ferrara at the end of Jan.
1469. The medal doubtless dates from one of these
occasions, probably from the former, when the poet would
be about 28 or 29. Gruyer’s reason for dating this and the
other medal about 1477 is not apparent.
