PIETRO DA FANO

407-9

PIETRO DA FANO

PIETRO DA FANO is known to have been working from about 1452, when the medal
of Lodovico Gonzaga was probably made, until 1464. In February of the latter year
he is shown by documents to have been in the service of the Marquess towards the end
of 1463 and beginningof 1464, though in what capacity we do not know. In the interval
he may have been at Venice, and made the medals of Pasquale and Giovanna Malipieri
(the Doge died on 5 May 1462). Pietro’s style is much under the influence of Pisanello,
and has a kind of gauche dignity, like that of Guidizani. On all three medals a small
crown is used as a stop ; Castellani suggests that it is a marquess’s crown and may mean
that the artist was, even when he made the Venetian medal, in the service of Lodovico.
He is, like Guidizani, weak in his Latin.

The title ‘Lieutenant-General of Fr. Sforza’ {Sforzia
should be Sforziae) dates the medal between 1452 and 1457.
The reverse gave a suggestion to Boldu (see no. 420). The
marks on the shoulder suggest armourers’ marks, but they
seem to be on stuff, not armour-plate.
