r. OP | VICTOR.! | • CA • | V Pearled border.
(a) Ravenna; bronze gilt, f 52 mm. The abbreviation
mark over the name Victori and the V (for Veneti)
are incised, and not visible on the cast. Cast provided
by Signorina Lorenzina Cesano, 1926. [Pl. 83.]
A Daniel Bragadin is mentioned as a member of the
Venetian Council in 1484 (Papadopoli, Mon. di Ven., ii,
p. 45) and 1489 (Cicogna, Inscr. Ven., v, p. 229). If he is
identical with the Sier Daniel Bragadin whose son Sier
Jacomo is mentioned by Sanuto (Diarii, vol. viii, p. 362),
he was dead by June 1509. No. Pa. Dns. seems to mean
‘lord of Neopaphos ’ in Cyprus. The Bragadini had large
possessions in that island.

Here the Cardinal is distinctly older than on the medal
sometimes attributed to Giancristoforo Romano (no. 863).
This probably dates from the artist’s Roman period
(1513-17). Domenico seems to have spent most of his
time in Rome from his election in 1493 to his death in 1523.
Foville dates the medal about 1508-10. .

On the motto of the rev., Kohler, loc. cit., quotes the
dedication to Barbadigo by Sabellicus of his Suetonius
(1491) in which occur such phrases as nihil maiore aequitate
et innocentia praeditum and quod . . . iuris et aequitatis
cultus . .. floret, quod religio et innocentia passim omnibus
alludunt. But there is nothing to show that Sabellicus had
the medal before him; his words may have suggested the
motto.
