The medal commemorates the terms obtained for the
people of Udine from King Ferdinand by Contarini, who
was governor of Friuli in 1530. The attribution to the
‘ Medallist of 1523 ’ was suggested by Bode. But it is to
be noticed that it has not the characteristic stops, and that
it is later in date than any other medals attributed to the
same hand of which the date can be fixed. See, however,
the medal of Montagnacco (no. 488).
There is another medal of Contarini, dated 1540, by
Giov. dal Cavino (Arm. I, 180, 11).

The laurel crown was given to the poet by Frederick HI
(therefore before Aug. 1493 ; perhaps, as Lancetti suggests,
in 1489). Attributions of this medal fluctuate between the
neighbourhood of Adriano Fiorentino and that of Fra
Antonio da Brescia and the ‘Medallist of 1523’. I now
distinctly incline to the last; cp. the form of the ground on
which Urania stands; the lettering, with its tendency to
the bar-less A; the predilection for the female nude.
Possibly, however, the artist may have been influenced by
Adriano Fiorentino (cp. the latter’s signed statuette of
Venus in the Foulc Collection, Bode, Italian Bronze Statu-
ettes, i, Pl. xviii), but this did not make him adopt Adriano’s
characteristic ugly form of bust. The reverse type is an
MEDALS
allusion to the poet’s astronomical studies. His odes were
published in 1529, and he was buried at Udine, where he
taught the humanities. His real name seems to have been
Agostino or Augusto Geronimiano, and he was still living
in 1519. The medal probably dates from about that time.

The attribution to the ‘Medallist of 1523’ is due to Bode;
and it was this medal which prompted Rosenheim’s identi-
fication of the medallist with Maffeo Olivieri. With the
