R1SCONSVLTVS EXCELaCOMES PALLET EQVES

MAGN v Bust 1., with short curly beard and
lank thick hair, cut off at level of nape of neck,
wearing robe tied in front, with stole (?) thrown
over r. shoulder.
Rev. IN MEMORIA AETERNA ER1T IVSTVS and,
in exergue, OP a iv a tvr a Justice, in tunic
and mantle, seated 1., holding sword erect in
r., scales in 1.
Arm. I, 130, 2 (118 mm.). [b. and d. obv. Pl. 100.]
(fl) Brescia (Brozzoni), 118 mm. Mazz. I, xxxvi, 2.
Rizz., no. 169. (Z>) London, V. A. M. (7133-1860),
f 118 mm. (c) Milan, Med. Mun. (Brera), f 118 mm.
(d) Modena, f 118 mm., instead of COMES PAL
reads IVDEX IVS. (e) Venice, Correr, f 115 mm.
Catal., no. 131. Friedl., p. 109, no. 10 (diam. incorrectly
given).
Here the subject seems older than on the smaller medal.
The Modena specimen, to judge from the absence of the
title Comes Palatinus, would seem to be earlier than the
others. The motto : Ps. iii. 7.
BEVILACQUA (Conte Gio. Francesco di
Gregorio).
552. Obv. IOANES FRACISCVS BIVILAQVA COMES
MAGNI a Bust 1., bearded, unclothed.
Rev. OP a iv a tvr a Prudence, nude but for
drapery falling from 1. shoulder to r. side,
standing to front, looking down 1. at mirror
held in r., and holding serpent in 1.
Arm. I, 130, 3 (64 mm.). [a. Pl. 99.]
(fl) Milan, Med. Mun. (Taverna), | 64-5 mm. Arm., loc.
cit.
MAGNI possibly for Magnificus; cp. the preceding
medal. Gio. Francesco was born on 30 May i486 and died
on 17 Apr. 1549 (Frizzi, p. 108).
553. Obv. Same as preceding (same model).
Rev. OP a iv a tvr a Prudence, nude but for
drapery over 1. shoulder, falling behind her,
standing three-quarters r., looking in mirror
held in 1.; her r. hand, lowered, seems to hold
drapery; behind it appears the head of a
serpent.
(a) Berlin, 64 mm. Friedl., p. no, no. 11. Not original.
[rev. Pl. 99.]
The signature on this rev. seems to be from the same
model as on the Milan specimen, but the figure of Prudence
has been completely remodelled. The appearance of the
serpent in both is very clumsily managed; and it is difficult
to decide which represents the earlier version.
CAROTO (Giovanni).
554. Obv. IOANNES CAROTVS PICTOR Bust 1.,
with lank hair cut off at nape of neck, wearing
plain robe.
Rev. OP*IV*TVR* (in exergue). The painter,
nude, seated on a block, drawing at a desk
from a nude young man standing before him.

[a. obv. c. rev. Pl. 100.]
(a) Berlin, 70 mm. Friedl., p. no, no. 14, Pl. xx. Hill,
P.M.I.A., p. 44, no. 19, Pl. xxii. Hab., Pl. Ixxiii, 1.
The edge of the reverse of this specimen has been
turned on a lathe and the signature all but obliterated.
(6) Brescia (Brozzoni), 70 mm. Mazz. I, xliv, 5.
Rizz., no. 170. (c) Turin, Royal Library.
This must be not Giov. Fr. Caroto (born c. 1480, died
1555) but his less well-known brother Giovanni (born
с. 1489, died between 1562 and 1567).
EMO (Giovanni).
555. Obv. (branch) IOANES AEMVS PyVyDIGNIS
SIMVS Bust 1., bearded, with full hair, wearing
plain round cap and gown.
Rev. IVLII M * DE latvrre (in arc below).
Three figures : on r. nude young man reclining
1. pouring water from an urn; before him stand
Abundance (?), nude, to front, holding cornu-
copiae in L, ears of corn in r., and Justice,
draped, to front, holding scales in r. and
lowered sword in 1.; landscape background,
with a great fortress.
Arm. I, 130, 5 (100 mm.). Friedl., p. 109, no. 8.
[fl. Pl. 101.]
(a) Milan (Brera), f 98 mm. Friedl., loc. cit. Arm.,
loc. cit.
P. V. is for Patricius Venetus (less probably Praetor
Veronae). Emo was governor of Verona in 1527, when
Pomedello made a medal of him. The fortress probably
represents Verona. The allegory must express his mild
and beneficent rule. (The year 1527 was one of famine
and pestilence.) He is to be distinguished from Giovanni
di Giorgio Emo, who was killed in the War of Ferrara in
1483 (Cicogna, Inscr., i, p. 36).
FLAMINIO (Marcantonio).
556. Obv. M ANTON1VS FLAMINEVS PROBVS ET

wrongly given as 68 mm.). (6) Brescia (Brozzoni),

Vinciguerra.
556 bis. Another medal of the same person, facing,
wearing cap, with inscr. M.ANTON1VS FLAMINIVS.
(lead, 60 mm.) is described by the Morbio Catalogue, 4270,
but no evidence as to its authorship is forthcoming.
