and silvered for use as a mirror). Some details modified
by chasing, such as ornament on shoulder of vase;

exergue. Triumphal car drawn by four gar-
landed elephants r., accompanied by four men,
two of whom carry standards; on the car is
Trajan seated r., laureate, in cuirass and palu-
damentum ; holds baton in 1.; rests r. arm on
shield charged with Medusa head; helmet at
side of seat; on side of car, relief of mask,
swag, and man leading goat.

This is quite in the manner of the medals of the Em-
perors; cp. especially the horseman with the reverse of
the Hadrian. Croto is possibly a merely fanciful name;
it is known as a Roman cognomen, but not in combination
with the praenomen Marcus. ‘Marco Croto o Crotto credo
milanese’, remarks Milanesi (MS., Siena).
