OTHER MEDALS OF TIME OF LEO X
882-6
MONTE SANSAVINO (Antonio Maria
Ciocchi del).
882. Obv. AI4TOI41VS DE MOI4TE • S • R • E • PRE •
C • S • P • Bust 1., wearing berretta and moz-
zetta. Triple moulded border.
Rev. • EC • IL • ASSER • ACERR • S • S • CL • HOS •
PERP • • An eagle, wings displayed, holding
a wreath in 1. foot, perched on a triple mount.
Arm. II, 97, 19 (80 mm.). Heiss, Flor., ii, p. 226, no. 2.
Hill, Rom. Med., pp. 60-1. [a. Pl. 141.]
(«) Berlin, | 83 mm. Simon, no. 216. (b) Brescia,
83 mm. Mazz. I, xlv, 1. Rizz., no. 515.
As Bode observes in the Simon Catalogue, this is by the
same hand as the preceding Medici medals. The abbrevia-
tions mean Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Presbyter Cardinalis
Sanctae Praxedis ecclesiasticae libertatis assertor acerrimus
sectarumque hostis perpetuus. The medal was doubtless
made during the Lateran Council which, summoned chiefly
at the Cardinal’s suggestion to counteract the work of the
Council of Pisa, sat from May 1512 to March 1517; it is,
however, later than 14 July 1514, when the subject became
Cardinal of S. Prassede. The wreath and the mount are
elements in his family arms.
MEDICI (Giuliano de’), Due de Nemours.
883. Obv. • D • IVLIANVS • MEDICES • L • F and,
below, v mdxv y Bust 1., with short beard
and curly hair, wearing flat cap with edges
turned up and tied on top, and fur-trimmed
dress.
Rev. None.
Arm. II, 94, x (58 mm.); III, 193, a. [a. Pl. 141.]
(a) Milan (Med. Mun.), 58 mm. Late cast. Arm., loc.
cit. Heiss, Flor., i, p. 152, no. 1, Pl. xx, 4.
In spite of the absence of the moulded borders, this
medal may very possibly be by the same artist as the three
preceding. It has the same bold, rather coarse style;
observe also the large round stops.
CASTELLO (PlERANTONIO Di).
884. Obv. V PETRVS • ANTONI • DE • CASTELLO
and, below, Bust 1., with short curly
beard and hair, wearing flat cap with back flap
lowered, and gown over undergarment with
lace trimming.
Rev. DVM SPIR1TVS HOS REGET ARTVS and,
below, - iriy • A laurel-tree, to which on r. is
tied a hound lying 1.; at foot of tree a shield
(flat-topped horse-head shape; the palle arranged
3, 2, 1) of Medici arms.
Arm. II, 128, 6 (45 mm.). V. Ostermann, Riv. Ital., i,
p. 205. [a. obv., b. rev., Pl. 141.]
(a) London, J 47-5 mm. Acquired 1924 (reverse nearly
obliterated). (6) Another (George 111), | 45 mm. After-
cast. (c) Paris, 45 mm. Arm., loc. cit. (d) Vienna,
| 47 mm. Bronze gilt. Good, old cast.
This medal appears to be by the same hand as that of
Giuliano de’ Medici bearing the same date. The likeness
in features of the sitter to Giuliano is doubtless a mere
coincidence. But it is to be observed that Pierantonio
must have been an adherent of the Medici; the shield
(which is of the same slightly uncommon shape as the
shield on the large medal of Giuliano, above, no. 881) bears
the Medici arms, and the hound is doubtless the symbol of
fidelity. We may note on this medal, as on the others,
a tendency to large round stops.
Ostermann’s guess that this person is Pietro di Niccold
Frangipane, Lord of Castello (Friuli), married in 1506, died
in 1545, seems to have little to be said for it.
The reading reget for regit in the motto (from Verg.
Aen. iv. 336) is also found without exception on other
medals of the sixteenth century which use this motto, and
suggests that that was the accepted reading of the time.
OTHER MEDALS OF TIME OF LEO X
885. Obv. LEO v X a PONT a MAX v Bust 1.,
wearing cope with floral decoration, and morse.
No border.
Rev. C P in large letters, and in exergue
ROMA Roma seated 1. on shields, holding
figure of Victory in r. Pearled border. (See
no. 887.)
Arm. II, 113, 26 (33 mm.); HI, 201, A. Bonanni, i, p. 163,

Heiss, Flor., i, p. 158, no. 5. (e) Another, with border
making 44 mm. Arm., loc. cit., note.
This is a hybrid, the reverse belonging to a medal of
Giuliano de’ Medici (see below, no. 887). C P is for Con-
sensu Populi.
886. Obv. LEO DECIMVS PONT1FEX MAXIMVS
Bust 1., tonsured, wearing cope with figures in
panels of orphrey and oval morse, on which
facing head. Pearled border.
Rev. FIA T PAXINVIRTV TETVA and in
exergue memorieoptim|pon Peace, Justice,
and Abundance, all standing to front; on L,
Peace, wearing girdled tunic, holds in r.
Medici device of diamond ring, feathers, and
scroll, and applies with 1. torch to shield and
helmet at her feet; Justice, nude to waist, holds
in r. a yoke, in 1. scales and sword; Abundance,
wearing loose tunic, places r. hand to bosom
and rests 1. on cornucopiae.
Arm. II, 113, 22 (44 mm.). Bonanni, i, p. 163, no. 3.
Martinori, p. 21, no. 2. [a. Pl. 141.]
(a) London (George HI), \ 42mm. Hill, Rom. Med.,
p. 61, Pl. x, 8. (6) Paris, 44 mm. Arm., loc. cit.
Heiss, Flor., i, p. 159, no. 6. (c) T. W. Greene,
43.5 mm.
The motto is from Ps. exxi. 7. Armand gives the exergual
inscription MEMORIA OPTIMI PONTIFIC1S, perhaps
by a mere slip. The yoke (with motto SVAVE) and the
ring with feathers and scroll (inscribed SEMPER) are
Medici devices (see Giovio, pp. 45, 47). This medal was
doubtless cast immediately after the death of Leo.
