The design of the reverse is an adaptation of that used
for Caterina Sforza’s medals, with the change of the word
Fama to Pax, and the addition of the figure of the latter.
The small medal (40 mm.; Arm. I, 89, 23; III, 24, b\
Sup., no. 813) reading CAROLVS* VIII’FRANCORVM*
IERVSAL* ET* SICIL* REX, with a portrait reduced from
the above, is not contemporary, and is probably of French
rather than Italian origin. The allegorical figure on the
reverse seems to date from the second half of the sixteenth
century.

Du Mas, a bibliophile as well as Councillor and Chamber-

and in Italy 1494-5; he died at Florence in the autumn of
1495. This medal suggests that he held a military command.

Rev. Y PRESIT Y Y DECVS y Antoine de Gimel,
with long hair, wearing cap and plate-armour,
sword at 1. side, riding 1. on horse, as on
medal of J ean Du Mas with slight modifications;
he holds sword instead of baton; on bardings
of the horse, the two heater-shaped shields are
of Gimel [barruly of twelve (arg. and az.), over
all a bend (gu.)].
1 J. G. appears to be the mark of a French metal-worker. His monogram occurs on other fine chasings, e. g. a medal
in the British Museum supposed to represent Francois de Tournon (1489-1562) and another (in Mr. T. W. Greene’s
Collection), which probably represents a Cardinal of the house of Lorraine (Charles, Card, de Lorraine, 1525-74, or Louis,
Card, de Guise, 1527-75). There is no reason to identify him with Jean Gourmont; the monogram is not the same. The
quality of the chasing indicates the seventeenth century.
