UNKNOWN YOUNG MAN.
1036. Obv. Bust of young man 1., with long
curly hair, wearing round cap with back edge
turned up; gown with pleated front.
Rev. A leopard, collared, seated 1., grasping
with dexter front paw stem of a laurel tree;
in field on 1. a star of six rays, on r. a crescent
increscent.
(a) Vienna, f 39 mm. Good. Burl. Mag., xxvii (1915),
p. 236, Pl. i, h. Hab., Pl. xlv, 1. [Pl. 172.]
That the animal on the reverse (which is doubtless
taken from a coat of arms) is a leopard is shown by the
spots, which are represented by minute punched circles,
and the collar. The date of the medal is perhaps between
1490 and 1500.
UNKNOWN WOMAN.
1037. Obv. Between the letters ▼ A ▼ v I ▼, bust
of young woman r.; hair hanging thick over
her ears, coiled at back of head, and adorned
with a jewel at the top; bodice open square in
UNKNOWN WOMAN.
1038. Obv. Bust 1., hair covering ears and
gathered up under a coif which is tied with
cord under chin, plain dress.
Rev. Wisdom, in tunic and mantle, standing
to front, head 1., looking at serpent which she
holds up in r., 1. holding edge of mantle.

The head-dress almost exactly resembles that of Nonina
Strozzi of 1489 (no. 957, Pl. 156).
REVERSE OF A MEDAL.

drapery standing L, hands joined, looking up

portraits of Neri Capponi attributed to Candida (see no. 839;

da Stia (no. 1017 b). [Pl. 135.]

The motto on the obv., usually misread (partly owing to
the medallist’s mistake in putting a stop after the initial
letter of inquietum) is from St Augustine’s Conf., i. 1. The
reverse is copied from the larger medal of Christ (see p. 232,
nos. 898 f.). My identification of the person as Dom Bal-
dassare, on the strength of the portrait by Perugino at
Florence, is not certain. But the medal is Florentine, and
somewhere about the same date as the painting.
