(a) Berlin, 58 mm. Hab., Pl. 1, 1. (b) Florence, 55 mm.

(d) Formerly Richard. Tres. de Num. II, xxxv, 6.
Heiss, Flor., i, p. 141, Pl. xviii, 1.
A somewhat grotesque portrait, only known in late,
rough castings, with the field between the letters stippled
in the seventeenth-century manner. It is doubtful how
much earlier the medal originated. Salutati, the Florentine
poet (1330-1406), was crowned with laurel as he lay on his
bier.

and mantle, and holds in r. a mirror with a face
reflected in it, in 1. a serpent. Plain raised rim.

{a) Paris (Armand), 93 mm. Arm., loc. cit. Heiss,
Flor., i, p. 142, Pl. xviii, 2.
A clumsy work of the end of the fifteenth century. It
has been maintained that it bears no resemblance to the
bust by Donatello generally accepted as the portrait of
Niccold da Uzzano, the leader of the Ottimati (1359-1433)—
a bust which Studniczka supposes to represent Cicero. But
the resemblance, though not close, is perceptible, especially
if allowance is made for the fact that the bust is from the hand
of a great sculptor, the medal a mere piece of shop-work.

‘ Semper’ was one of the Medici mottoes.
MEDICI (Giovanni de’), delle Bande Nere.
II09*. Although Giovanni died in 1526, his three medals
are not included here, since they all seem to belong to
a slightly later date. Danese Cattaneo is recorded as
having made a medal of him in 1546, and Habich (p. 127)
attributes the pieces with the inscriptions Propugnatori
Italiae and Folgore diguerra to that artist. For all these
medals see Arm. II, 95, 6-9; HI, 193, by Heiss, Flor., i,
Pl. xx, 7; xxi, 1 and 2; Hab., Pl. xcvii, 10; liv, 1.

LATER RESTITUTIONS

11 IO. Some of the restitutions of members of the Medici
made at a still later date are enumerated by Armand,
though he includes among them a few pieces which are
contemporary with the persons who appear on them.
Since these iconographically mischievous restitutions
are constantly cited as if they were contemporary, it seems
desirable to give a brief list by which they may be identified.
From this list are excluded medals of persons who flourished
later than the accession of Alessandro in 1532. Nearly all
of them are the work of Antonio Selvi: exceptions are
nos. 3, 28, and possibly no. 14. They begin with Chiaris-
simo II (no. 6 below).
