GIROLAMO LIPAROLO OR LUPARELLO
DIE- and seal-engraver, employed at the Neapolitan mint from 1462 to 1497.

the breast, device of an ermine); inscr. be-
tween two pearled circles.

gold (struck), 17-69 grm. and (c) bronze. Arm., loc. cit.
Sambon, ibid. Heiss, Mon. Hisp. Crist., Pl. 120, 1.
Sambon compares the obverse to that of the coronato del-
1' angelo by Girolamo Liparolo, first struck in 1487; the
medal may belong to this time and the same artist, for
bronze coins with a similar reverse type were coined in
1487. The reverse is copied from the small Victor medal
of Alfonso V (no. 48).

cap, and robe with ermine on breast; inscr.

Arm. II, 29, 3 (33 mm.). Van Mieris, i, p. 117. Sambon,
Riv. Ital., iv (1891), p. 481, note. [a. Pl. 50.]
(a) Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, struck, f 33 mm.
This was until recently known only from Van Mieris’
engraving of the specimen which he saw in the Fagel
Collection. Sambon (to whom the Oxford specimen, since
discovered by Mr. Leeds, was unknown) doubts the accur-
acy of the rendering of the inscription (which, however, is
quite straightforward and natural) and says the form of the
cap is due to the imagination of the engraver (although it
is a perfectly possible form). Observe that the king wears
the same (ermine) device as on no. 323, and that the double
pearled circle also recurs.
325. Obv. FERRANDVS ° D ° G ° R ° SICILIE S H1ERV °
Bust r., crowned, with long hair, wearing
cuirass. Inscr. between two plain circles.
Rev. Similar to no. 323 (same die).

The fashion of the hair approximates to that on the
medals of Frederick as king. The bust is of the form affected
by Lysippus, but as the medal is probably later than 1490,
it is doubtful whether it can be by him. Frederick visited
Rome in 1492 and 1493, but there is no reason to suppose
that the medal was not made in Naples.
