Tue blood from the brain, cerebellum, medulla oblongata,
an J membranes of these parts, is received into the lateral
sifluses, or veins of the dura mater, one of which empties its
blood through the foramen laeerum in basi cranii into tlie ix-
TiRnal jugular, which descends in the neck by the carotid
arteries, receives the blood from the thyroidtal and inter,ad
maxillary veins, and empties itself into the subclaviana with-
in tlie thorax.
The vena azygos receives the b'ood from the bronchial
superior wsuplutgeul, vertebral, and intercostal veins, and
empties it into the superior cuvj.
VENA CAVA INFERIOR.
The vena cava inferior is the trunk of all the abdominal
veins, and those of the lower extremities, from which parts
the blood is returned in the following manner :
Tlie veins of the toes, called the digital veins, receive the
blood from the digital arteries, and form on the back of tlie
foot three branches, one on the great toe, called the cepludic;
another, which runs along the little toe, called the venu saphe-
na; add one on the back of the foot, vena dorsalis pedis; and
on the sole of the foot they evacuate themselves into the
plantar reins.
The three veins iu the upper part of the foot coming to-
gether above the ankle, form the anterior tibial; and the
plantar veins, with a branch from the calf of the leg, called
the sural vein, form the posterior tibial : a branch also ascends
in the direction of the fibula, called the peroneal vein. These
three branches unite before the ham, into one branch, the
subpopliceul rein, which ascends through the ham, carrying
