Embryo. The child in the womb is so called before the fifth
month, after which it is termed factus ; from e^Cpiz-w to bud
forth.

Enarthrcsis. An articulation of bones; from ev in, and afyn

a joint or articulation.
Enteric. Belonging to the intestines; from em^ov an cntr'aH

or intestine.

Epidermis. The scarf or outermost skin; from ewi upon,

and tegftts the skin.
Epididymis. The small ohlong body which lies above the testi.

cles; from mi upon, and h^vy.o? a testicle.
Epig astric. The superior part of the abdomen; from sot upon,

and ycttrne the stomach.
Epiglottis. A cartilage of the larynx so called ; from em up-
on, and >/Xmt7i; the aperture of the larynx ; being situated

upon the glottis.
Epiphysis. A portion of bone growing upon another bone, but

separated from it by a cartilage: from tm upon, and tyvoo to

grow.

Epiploon. The membranous viscus of the abdomen, which covers
the intestines, and hangs to the bottom of the stomach ; from
E7ri7r>.s« to swim upon.

Epistropheus. Thesecondvertebraoftheneck; from £OTrpo<?*»
to turn round ; because the head is turned upon it.

Ethmoid. From efi^oc a sieve, and eiJo? resemblance; be-
ing perforated like a sieve.
