The little Nursing Virgin, by the same artist, an early
work still wholly inspired by his master, Robert Campin, was
hitherto known only by copies. None of the numerous writers
on Memlinc ever mentioned the charming little Virgin in
red, sitting in a room, yet, here, I believe, we must recognise
an early work of the Master, r——j-i-r-r--~x--
35 These pictures, all in the front rank, have literally been
discovered by Mr. Renders. The explanation of his success
is, that unlike many collectors of to day, he is a genuine con-
noisseur, both gifted with a keen sensibility for artistic quality
and armed with personally acquired knowledge based on careful
comparative study of technique. Indeed many a writer on art,
with ponderous volumes to his credit, might envy Mr. Renders
his intimate and direct knowledge of pictures, and also, let us
add, his ever fresh enthusiasm, for, at the root of every obstinate
and victorious effort, there needs must be a great love.*-—~
Personal experience enables me to appreciate thoroughly the
measure of success attained by this Bruges collector : having
myself taken on behalf of the «Societe des Amis du
Musee de G a n d » an active part in their laborious work
of picture - hunting, which resulted in the complete transform-
ation of the Ghent Museum. I know well what amount of
labour is necessary to buy wisely with very limited means.
