56 From thence the subject spreads to the Siennese and Floreiv
tine styles of painting, we have, in particular, a Virgin suckling
the Child by Donato (f 1347) in the Berlin Museum, and by
Ambrogio Lorenzetti (in works dated from 1331 to 1334) in
the Siena Seminary; the gesture of the Child in the 14th. Italian
century already shows the variations we noted above in Campin,
in Rogier and in the tondos. We have just seen in the case
of the Crucifixion bearing the arms of the Duke of Berry how
frequently, at that time already, the Flemish painters borrowed
