The very fine work we have just described is a new
proof of the continuity and connexion which reigned in the
14th. century throughout the whole Flemish School. We have
seen Rogier reproducing his Master’s work almost line for
line; now it would be Memling who, although already possess'
ing a rare and vigorous talent as colourist, recopies the compo'
sition of his senior. Infinitely valuable on account of its
remarkable aesthetic qualities, this head is also of great import
by reason of the precise and certain information it affords us
of the habits of work and the artistic customs of the great
