TO the right of the picture (on the left of the spectator)
against a black background, Christ, the Lord of the
Universe, stands out; He is clothed in a grey garment
with a mantle of an ancient red colour embroidered with gold,
and is holding in His left hand the globe of the world repre-
sented by a glass sphere set off with metal; the right hand is
raised in the act of blessing. On the other side is the
Virgin at prayer, clothed in a red robe and a large dark -
blue cloak covering the white coif that protects the head.
3S The characteristic feature of this picture is the union
on the same panel of two figures which originally should
have formed a diptych. It is to be noted however, that
we have already met this peculiarity in the Master de
Flemalle (the presumed Campin) namely in his Virgin at
prayer and Christ blessing in the Johnson collection at
It is true that the author of our picture is no great
master but nevertheless his work is interesting : it shows
us that after Petrus Christus1 time, there was in Bruges a
