THE MASTER OF THE BARONCELLI PORTRAITS.
ftft THE ANNUNCIATION, IN A ROOM. :-1-
ft Oa\ panel : 39 centimeters high by 49 centimeters unde, ft

IN a bedchamber lighted by a window visible in the back -
ground of the picture, the Virgin, clothed in a dark blue
garment with grey fur cuffs is shown kneeling at a
prie - dieu that is partly covered by her ample dull - red
mantle. Behind her, there is a bed of which the canopy
and hangings are of green cloth. On a chest are some
earthenware and metal utensils, a vase with a wrought
brass cover; below the window -•sill is a wooden bench with
red cushions. The angel is clad in a bluish white mantle
and a cope of old - gold brocade with orange - tinted facings,
trimmed with precious stones and pearls. It must be noted
that on the window - pane there are traces of a monogram
(L P ?) and the remains of some coat of arms that have
not yet been identified. J-1-:-r——r-r—— i——j—
ft It is to Mr. Hulin de Loo that is due the attributing of
this picture to the Master of the Baroncelli Portraits, who was
one of the successors of Petrus Christus. Our artist must have
been a near contemporary of the author of the preceding
panel, but he appears to have been far more gifted. Mr. Hulin
de Loo who is preparing a study on the works of this painter
