ONDON.—The Art-Workers' Guitd is to
be heartily congratuiated upon its elec-
tion of so able and so individual an
architect as Mr. C. Harrison Townsend
to the post of Master for the present year, in
succession to Mr. George Frampton, R.A. We
have pleasure in giving a reproduction of a portrait
of Mr. Townsend recentiy painted by Mr. Alphaeus
P. Cole.

In his portraiture — or rather in his briiliant
portrait sketches — Mr. J. H. Bacon shows an
uncommon sympathy for peopie of aii ages and
conditions. Most artists are bound by the iimita-
tions of their taients to but one class of portraits :

oniy a fetv are equaily at their ease whether they
represent wotnen, men, or chiidren. Mr. Bacon's
skiii as a sketcher of male portraits has been
demonstrated several times in THE STUDio; and
that he is no less happy in his portrait-studies of
chiidren is proved by a charming sketch of his
own daughter, here reproduced in colours.

The exhibition of the Royai Society of Painters
in Water Coiours is more than usuaiiy interesting.
The coiiection which it presents of various types
of artistic production is particuiarly well-balanced,
and it cannot be reproached, like so many of its
predecessors, with a want of hgure work of good
quaiity. Mr. Anning Beli's finely-designed and
robustly-painted T?M<7wa/?7-, Mr. J. R. Weguelin's
daintily-imagined CayVwc Zbyaai, Miss Fortescue-
Brickdale's dignified and serious composition
<?/
and Mr. J. Walter West's
pretty fancy 7%^ &7wT*
A/iAwT-, are all memorable
drawings ; and there is a
specially characteristic
study, ^4 IF<7777a7z

von Herkomer. The best
of the landscapes are Sir
E. A. Waterlow's graceful

Mr. Robert Little's vigor-

Mr. Napier Hemy's Z?77?/7M?

of exceptional strength,
without any touch of ex-
aggeration; and Mr. R. W.
AMan's coast subject,

record of an effect of grey
atmosphere. 7%: /?M^<;7-,

some drawings by Mr.
Crane, Mr. J. Walter West,
and Mr. A. Rackham rnust
not be forgotten.
