overmantel which is novel and striking, but gives
the front wah of the chimney a curious effect of
having been turned inside ouh The grate itself,
though somewhat iavish of brass, is pieasantiy
simple, and the touch of warm red behind the
pierced decoration harmonises well with the
mahogany setting ,
Mr. Ambrose Heal, jun., makes a good display
of his new furniture in the wood which he caHs
siiver-grain—a modihed revival of the hard, close-
hbred substance made famiiiar to us in our grand-
mothers' tea-caddies. It hasadistinctandpleasant
character of its own, and iends itseif weii to
inlaid decoration. One of the best in form and
construction is a wardrobe iniaid with biue wood and
pewter, having handies of white metal with enamei
backs. The toiiet tabie with its hooded giass is
similariy decorated, and the set is compieted by a
hanging mirror and a bedside cabinet with book-
sheives and cupboard. These are piaced against a
background of figured iinen, and a hand made rug
on the 8oor repeats the pieasant note of blue. The

whole scheme is weii thought out and worthily
executed, and the novelty of surface and colour
promises to wear well and repay companionship.
Mr. Heal also shows some admirable craftsmanship
in oak, including a large wardrobe and a polygonal
hall-table, inlaid with chequers of boxwood and
ebony.
Among the furniture, mention should also be
made of a charming little painted cabinet by
Joseph Southall, with its panels full of delicate
technique and colour.
A temporary lull in the dernand for wall-papers
is doubtless the cause of the diminution in this
class of exhibit; but such good designs as Mr.
Metford Warner shows on behalf of Messrs. Jeffrey
& Co. are not likely to be long out of fashion.
Among them is Mr. Walter Crane's beautiful
orange-tree paftern—one of his happiest efforts in
mural work; also his "Rose bush" and "Corn
field" papers; and a very pleasing seriesof designs
by Alan F. Vigers — the "monkshood," the
"columbine," and the "Japanese rose." Herc
