7-?'/<2/? for Atherton Baptist Chapel, have been
already referred to, but there are no fewer than
hfteen of Mr. Bell's designs on view, though in
some cases carried out by other executants.
Three of these are his own beautiful pen-and-ink
drawings for book iilustration (inctuding one for
the A%*7v'w'.s* A*/*<sg*7-w); two are for tiles, which
are particutariy successfut, and seven are cartoons
for stained and leaded glass. These comprise

a different vein, C??/'?'<f <27?<f In the
grave and reverent treatment of chitdhood and
maternity Mr. Anning Belt is atways at his best.
Mr. Louis Davis is another designer usualty very
happy in his representations of children, though
he approaches them perhaps in a rnore fanciful
and buoyant manner, and enters more naively
into the spirit of ptay. His painted shutters,

are at present rather spoilt by their frame. They
are intended for the altar-piece in the chapel of
the Universities' Mission, Westminster. The
cartoon for a window on the subject of Dz-M//?
<?/&'. CaT/^T-?'/?^ is very pleasing; and the designs
for the east windows in the churches of St. Mary
and St. Nicholas, Littlemore, and St. Anselm's,
Pinner, show the steady advance of this artist in
ecclesiastical work. Their chief fault lies in the

young designer, Mr. Alex-
ander Gascoyne, whose
panel for a door has the
wise economy of line and
judicious use of colour
which have marked his
early work. At present the
treatment of glass doors
and windows, both in
ecclesiastical and domestic
building, shows a certain
stagnation. Failing the
glass itself, however, the
exhibition contains a great
number of cartoons for
this class ot design. That
