of historic ornament, carving in wood, pattern-
designing and pictorial composition, water-color,
cast and geometric drawing. Though the school
has now been maintained for over twenty years, its
present aims, in the direction of an introductory
manual instruction that shall be comprehensive and
general, date back a few years only. The system
is to some extent an amplification of the methods
of Mr. Tadd. Walter Crane has expressed his
interest in the undertaking, and the school has
profited by the suggestions of Professor Ware and

Dr. Canfield, of Columbia University. Among the
interesting features of the exhibition should be
mentioned a settle in wood, of which the back,
carved with the sort of design apparently in favor at
the school, balanced but not symmetrical, was con-
structed to be let down as a table-top ; and a large
carved chest of quartered oak, framed and pegged,
the top bearing a design representing “ Gunnar in
the Snake Pit,” after the Volsunga Saga. The jar
and Greek box shown in the accompanying cut
were exhibited by a student who was also repre-
