of these beautiful chej-d’mivres. Every one knows
of the perfection of the Tiffany artists in the
application of the Favrile glass to windows. The
method of making the glass lampshades is
similar, only on a diminutive scale. The artist’s
original design is transferred to a working cartoon;
and from this again a flat diagram is traced, in
which each section of the design, as indicated by the
lead lines, is numbered to correspond with the car-
toon; this puzzle-like diagram is then cut up into
the separate numbered sections with an ingenious
pair of scissors which snips out, at one operation,
the proper allowance for the leads, as calculated in
the design. These numbered puzzle-pieces of the
diagram are then handed on, with the design, to

ourselves round the well-lighted board of a hos-
pitable dining-room, after the labors of the day,
betake ourselves to the drawing-room—that haven
of coolness and relaxation, with its comfortable
chairs restfully occupied here and there by graceful
forms in diaphanous draperies, making rhythm
with ceaselessly moving fans—we are glad (if we
think about it) that this enchantment is not dis-
pelled by an arc light of a thousand candle power,
and we bless the delicious harmony of Tiffany
lamps and Tiffany shades, fitting satellites of such
soothing radiance.
I had the pleasure of being taken round the Tif-
fany Studios the other day, where I watched the
deft workers at the various processes in the creation

consume us with contempt for the normal paleness
of Diana’s silvery beams, or implant in us a longing
for the permanent endowment of a midnight sun !

those who select bits of glass of the correct shade of
color, pasting upon them the paper-puzzle-pieces,
