offence to the peculiar “ localness ” of neighbouring
work.
The five-roomed cottages by Mr. Charles
Spooner (page 148) were
probablytreated in a similar
way, or by plastering the
walls and leaving the marks
of the trowel. This last
method is one tbat might
easily degenerate into an
affectation, but we have
seen cottages in Sussex
finisbed in this way with
pleasant results. The Cot-
tage of which we have
given two views is a de-
lightful example of that
architect’s sympathy with
county tradition. It is as
typical of Sussex as Messrs.
Dünn and Watson’s cot-
tages at Abinger are
typical of Surrey. Nothing
could be more admirable
and satisfactory than these
modern examples of

cottage building. Here is a case of the right
thing in the right place. The same may be
said for the inside of the common roorn and the
