Some Antique Watches

Marfels collection and one owned by Thomas R.
Proctor. The latter dates from the middle of the
eighteenth Century, and is saicl to have been the
property of Cardinal Antoinelli. The cover, sides
and back are of rock crystal with silver gilt mount-
in gs. The front is beautifully enamelled and
chased with religious emblems relating to the cruci-
fixion: the ladders, hammers, spokes, spears and
crown of thorns. These quaint watches, montres
d’abbsesse, a favourite form with some of the early
French makers, were worn by high clerical digni-
taries, suspended by a chain or cord round the neck.
Other quaint conceits are found in plenty in the
mechanical watches. One shown on an earlier

page is very skillfully made and beautifully finished.
It is a verge escapement. The movement is en-
closecl in a handsomely chased gold case. The time
dial is on the outer edge, the space inside the dial
being occupied by a fine example of gold repousee
work on a blue-black ground representing the front
of an elaborate building having a balcony supported
by four decorated columns. On pressing the pen-
dant a man suddenly appears in the upper opening
with a hammer in his left hand with which he strikes
the hours on the scythe of Father Time, who ap-
pears at the opening on the opposite siele. The two
Cupids complete the Operation by alternately strik-
ing the quarterl indicated, on the two lower bells.
This watch is owned by Frederick T. Proctor.

collection of his brother is seen herewith—a watch
of German workmanship, the maker’s name un-
known, but dating from about 1700. The case is
copper-gilt. The movement is a verge. The face
and dials are gilt, decorated with silver filagree
work. The lower dial shows the time, the upper
the day of the month. The opening on the left
shows the signs of the zodiac and the month, the
opening on the right the constellations.
There is an astronomical air about a curious
