wouid suffce to make the
reputation of any crafts-
man, just as his etchings
wouid estabiish the fame
of any engraver. To frnd
so many combined
in a singie artist it were
necessary to go back to the
time of the Renaissance.

"THE GARDENS OF
ENGLAND."
The Speciai Winter Number of
"THE STUDio"for 1908-9 forms a
companion voiume to the last
Winter Number, which was devoted
to gardens in the Southern and
Western Counties. The present
volume is concerned with the Mid-
land and Eastern Counties, which
contain some of the finest and best
known gardens in the Kingdom.
In selecting the illustrations especial
attention has been given to features
and details of value to those who
are designing or re-atranging gar-
dens of more modest dimensions.
There are in all about 130 iMus-
trations, selected from some hun-
dreds of photographs taken exclu-
sively for this volume, forming a
unique collection of garden studies ;
while an especial feature of the
book is the series of coloured
plates after water colours by George
S. Elgood, R.I., E. Arthur Rowe,
E. A. Chadwick and E. H. Adie.
