during the winter. As the plan on this page shows,
the reception rooms are separated from the kitchen
and ofRces by the main staircase. The requisite
area for the bedrooms is obtained by project-
ing the frrst Hoor beyond the ground door waiis
in the characteristic manner of oid country
houses. The architects, Messrs. Hubbard and
Moore, were guided in their design by the broad
and simpie styie of the traditiona! Surrey residence,
and by using suitabie iocai building materiais the
generai colour of the buiiding harmonises with its
surroundings. Some of the materiais used were
dark hand-made sand-faced roohng tiies, dark
brown Bargate stone, weii-oiied oak timber framing
hiied in with piaster and coated with local pebbies.
The contractors were Messrs. Heal & Jackson, of
Godaiming.

SuRiMONO were employed in Japan as New
Year Cards are used in the West, to be forwarded
to friends upon the irrst of January and other
especiai occasions. They are remarkabie for the
daintiness of finish bestowed upon them by artist
and printer, and as exampies of chromo-xylography
they are without paraiiei in the history of printing.
Not the ieast interesting of the works of Hokusai
are the charming iittie prints of this nature designed
by him for his patrons.
The exampie which we now reproduce is par-
ticuiarly characteristic of the decorative charm of

his drawing and of his nervous and sympathetic
outiine. It represents the preparations to ceie-
brate the or Fete of the Royai Doii,
which takes piace yeariy on the 3rd of March.
The inscription on the iid of the box reads,
" <%«/&<?," or " Box of Royal Doiis," and
the kneeiing figure is in the act of opening the
box to take out the doil which wiii be exhibited on
the " or sumptuous carpet carried by the
other figure.
This exampie is produced by printing from
various wood biocks in the same manner, and is
of the same size, as the originai.

T ONDON.—The most interesting exhibition
g of the season is perhaps that of the Goupii
§ Gaiiery Saion, which remains open tiii
^ Christmas. Scarceiy a younger painter
of promise is omitted, and it provides an excei-
lent opportunity for studying future tendencies.
Besides the younger eiement, such renowned
painters as Messrs. J. Lavery, Wiison Steer, Bianche,
and others contribute. M. Bianche's interiors show
the best of his genius, that mastery of accessory
effects which sometimes comes to the rescue in the
least satisfactory of his portraits. Mr. Wiison
Steer's Aw/c //a:7-/<7M7- must rank with his finest
landscapes ; the disturbed effect of the iight as the
heavy rain-clouds pass over the country is wonder-
fuliy interpreted. Mr. Orpen most distinguishes
himseif of the younger men in H C<7/Zf<772, with its
consummatedraughtsmanship, especially to be noted
in the giri's wrist and hand; the picture, too, has
