in the recent exhibition at
South Kensington in con-

comment, all these contri-

having been referred to in
the article we published last
month.

LONDON.—The selection of Mr. Frank
Short, A.R.A., as President of the Royal
Society of Painter-Etchers, in succession
to the late Sir Francis Seymour Haden,
was formally approved by His Majesty King
George V. last month. Mr. Short was born in
June, 1857, and, as mentioned by Mr. Salaman
in his article this month, the profession he first
adopted was that of a civil engineer, with which he
continued to be associated, nominally at all events,
until 1904, when he resigned his membership of the
Institute of Civil Engineers. Mr. Short joined
the Painter-Etchers in 1885; and in 1906, with the
election of himself and Mr. Strang as Associates of
the Royal Academy, the recognition of engravers

as a specific class was revived after being obsolete design for book decoration
