The design in relation to
THE PRINTING OF WALL
PAPER
Certain things with which we are con-
stantly associated have come to be taken
as a matter of course. To carefully notice
the wall paper in a room (unless it be
either distinctly beautiful or distinctly
ugly) is as unusual as to notice particu-
larly that there is a floor to walk on.
Furthermore, even some of us who are in-

terested in the theory and practice of de-
sign to such an extent that we can study
the “repeats” in a design, and appreciate
the differences between a William Morris
paper and a purely commercial paper, fail
to give any consideration to the skill in
craftsmanship which is demanded for the
actual reproduction of a design.
Papers are printed either by machine or
by hand. If by the first method the de-
sign is on a roller, if by the second flat
blocks are used. Only very exclusive pa-
pers, of which comparatively small quan-
tities are printed, are usually done by
hand, for the process involves considerably
more time and skill. Hand-printed papers
are more durable because the colors are
laid on one upon another after the last
printing has dried, while in the process of
