THE INTERNATIONAL STUDIO

11

trated in this book is the group of buildings
by Albro and Lindeberg on the great
Tracy Dows Estate at Rhinebeck, N. Y.
Here the house, the superintendent’s quar-
ters, the play-house, the gate-lodge, the
stables, the farm cottages and other build-
ings have been designed with an excellent
general simplicity and local appropriate-
ness, and with an excellently harmonious
conformity compared one with another.
Each is individual and well studied, and
all are part of one great scheme.
Follows some interesting and nicely
studied work by Bigelow and Wadsworth,
of Boston, and some examples of the ad-
mirable work being done by D. Knicker-
backer Boyd, of Philadelphia. The work
of another Philadelphia firm, Brockie and
Hastings, is illustrated by a great rambling
country house in a free adaptation of the
Tudor style, consistently enough carried
out in cut-stone and more informal local
masonry.
Several photographs remind us that
Frank Chouteau Brown, of Boston, is work-
ing in as picturesque and individual a vein

as of old, and is as facile in architecture as
in “Letters and Lettering.”
One of the most thoroughly interesting
groups of photographs in the book is that
showing sundry views of the country
house of Thomas Hastings, of the firm of
(the late) Carrere and Hastings. This
house, with its conjoined gardens and other
features, is one of the happiest achieve-
ments in recent American architecture—
reserved, picturesque and thoroughly
charming in detail and ensemble.
Cope and Stewardson, of Philadelphia,
one of the best “all-around” firms in the
country, are quite properly represented in
the collection, and Cram, Goodhue and
Ferguson, the great Norman Gothic church
architects of Boston, show an amazing
versatility in other directions. Two im-
portant estates are illustrated, the first
being a great house in careful adaptation
of the French chateau, designed for Mrs.
J. Nicholas Brown, at Newport, R. I. To
quote Mr. Day in the introduction, this
building is full of “that urbane quality—
that fine restraint distinctive of Louis XIV
in the minor French chateaux.” It is a
long step from this sort of thing to the next
