THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF
WILLIAM COBBETT
IN ENGLAND AND AMERICA
BASED UPON HITHERTO UNPUBLISHED FAMILY PAPERS
By LEWIS MELVILLE
Author of “William Makepeace Thackeray,” etc.
THIS Biography of William Cobbett is based
mainly upon unpublished correspondence, gath-
ered from many sources. Sir William Cobbett and
Mr. Richard Cobbett have placed at Mr. Melville’s
disposal the letters and papers of their grandfather in
their possession. Most of these were collected by their
uncle, the late James Paul Cobbett, whose intention it
was at one time to write the life of his father. The
correspondence printed in this volume includes letters
from Cobbett to Queen Caroline, to William Wind-
ham, Joseph Bonaparte, etc., etc.
This is the first exhaustive biography of a man who,
“ born at the plough-tail,” as he put it, raised himself
to a position from which for years he exercised an
influence as far-reaching as that of any personage in
the kingdom; and who, learning English at the age of
twenty-three, was, before he reached middle-age,
acclaimed in two continents as one of the most effec-
tive writers of showy and racy English.
Mr. Melville has completed a biography which will
rank with his “Thackeray” as an exceptional achieve-
ment in this branch of literature.
Numerous Illustrations. Two Volumes. $10.00 net. Postpaid, $10.50
