be ignored, and in after years he would express
regret that he had not seized the opportunity
afforded him to give up the study of architecture
in favour of this other branch of art. They were
only fleeting regrets, however, for he never relin-
quished his intention to succeed as an architect.
He hoped to accomplish great things, not only in
his own practice, but in the realm of architectural
education.
Building work soon began to trespass, in the
most desirable way for a professional man, on the
