a picture which was selected
by Sir Edward Poynter,
the President of the Royal
Academy, and The Tambour
Frame by Melton Fisher
are both popular works.

‘‘YACHT RACING IN THE SOLENT”
inaugurated a series of free
lectures which helped to
stimulate an increased
interest in the ancient and
modern works in the local
gallery.
Besides some examples of
other schools, such as works
by Van Dyck, Tintoretto,
Daubigny, Jules Breton and
others, the collection of
original paintings includes
a valuable group showing
the rise and progress of the
English school of painting
and a small but represen-
tative number of Australian
works. The English works
include a fine life-study by
Etty and an exquisite land-
scape by Bonington, besides
a number of canvases
by painters of to-day.

Yacht Racing in the Solent-,
more pictorial but strongly
painted is A Slimmer
Morning by H. H. La
Thangue, R.A., while
Clausen’s End of a Long
Day has all the best qualities
