Martyrology. In another hand narrower and blacker.
English saints are of course added to the ordinary text and one
addition is made in rubric: see below. The extracts relating to
English saints have been printed (from Arundel 68, the source of
this book) in Procter and Dewick’s edition of Whytford’s Marti-
loge, p. 287, Henry Bradshaw Soc.
There are small square pictures of the occupations at the beginning
of each month. They are of fair average foreign work.
Jan. in hood and cap sits at table, holding a bowl. The initials to
the days are alternately red and blue filled with penwork. For
papa episcopus is substituted.
Feb. stands in a room near the fire, warming his hands.
Mar. prunes trees, a bottle behind him. On 15 Kai. Ap. a passage
in red recording a gift of two corrodies by Richard II in 1395.
This is the only addition thus distinguished.
Ap. youth, hawk on hand : bird in air.
May king in blue, crown and sceptre, holds large white 5-petalled
flower on stalk.
June woman in red shears sheep.
July reaps (another artist), vu Non. The transl. of S. Thomas
partly erased.
Aug. threshes.
Sept, treads grapes.
Oct. sows.
Nov. singes pig.
Dec. beats oaks for pigs.
The pictures for July—Dec. are better than those at least for Mar.—
Jttne.
The text on the martyrdom of S. Thomas 29 Dec. is partly erased.
