I have no doubt that the lost name is that of Dr John Dee.
Halliwell, in his edition of the catalogue of Dee’s MSS (Camd. Soc.,
1842, Diary of John Doe) identified it with no. 167 in the list.
I prefer no. 114, “Boetii Arithmetica, pergameno 4t0”; no. 167
is C.C.C., Oxford, 224.
The book must have been parted with by Dee before his death.
His library was not finally dispersed till 1625-6. See my Lists of
MSS owned by Dr John Dee, Bibliogr. Soc. 1921.
1. ff. iii b iv have in a different hand from the text, but not much
later, the Capitula of the Arithmetica.
Arithmetica Boethii ........ f. 1
Initial 1 : a figure of Boethius drawn in red outline. He is
robed and bearded, and holds a book.
At top is (xii) Liber S. zEdmundi regis et m.
Domino Simmacho patricio. Boetius.
In dandis accipiendisque muneribus
There are scholia, marginal and interlinear, not very copious.
Initials to chapters are in red, green, and blue.
f. 27. Finit lib. 1. Inc. secundus.
Ends 62 a: exemplar adiecimus. Two diagrams follow, the
second occupying all 62 b.
2. In a smaller hand after the first six lines .... 63

Gerberti expositio. Hie locus quern quidam inuictum estim-
