II. f. 137 a is blank. On the verso is pasted a remarkable early
copper engraving, Flemish, representing in the foreground
from L. the Annunciation, Nativity and Adoration of the
Magi. The background is a landscape crowded with
hills, buildings (cities, windmills, towers etc.), cattle, and
a procession of figures—the train of the Three Kings. In
the sky near the R. is the Star with ten points and the
Child in the centre.
There is the following lettering. At top in the sky (from Z.)
Iheruselem. Syon. Galiley. On the roof of a house on R.
cana. On the Z. margin from bottom Madelan (near a
large building with detached tower), iordan (by a river),
caffarna (by a circular city). Gabriel’s scroll is also lettered
ave gracia pie.
The composition recalls that of the “Joys of the Virgin” by
Memling at Munich. It is assigned by Lehrs Peintre-Graveur, III.
147, to the Meister mit d. Blumenrahmen. The only other known
copy is a rather less good one at Budapest which was reproduced
by the International Chalcographical Society (1887, no. 9).
I owe this information to Mr Campbell Dodgson of the British
Museum. This part of the book has at first an old foliation 174—
which soon ceases.
At bottom of 138 is: sub : de : Re : Le : te
