CATALOGUE OF MANUSCRIPTS

[89

The decoration is interesting and good. The ‘ saw ’ pattern in
blue and red runs down the side of many columns. Each book and
prologue has a fine initial in gold and colour: the more part are
decorative only.
The first prologue has Jerome in pink chasuble over alb writing
at desk, on punctured gold ground : he is nimbed and tonsured: on
the cusped projection of the border in the lower margin are
perched a cock and a fox watching it, a cat with a mouse in its
mouth, and a yellow elephant. Genesis has an admirable initial the
length of the page containing seven tall quatrefoil and one upright
oblong picture, with gold grounds. The decorative panels which
intervene between these are of the finest work and so is the top and
bottom of the letter. The quatrefoils represent the seven days of
creation, a. The Creator in blue over red (as throughout) holds the
globe, b. He holds a globe divided horizontally, c. He holds a tree
and a globe of land and water, d. He sets the sun in heaven and
holds the moon. e. He creates birds and beasts, f. He creates
Eve. g. He rests.
At bottom is the Crucifixion with Mary and John. The three
small quatrefoils above and on R. and L. are the dove and two
angels.
A magpie, dogs, a deer, and a peacock done in silver (tarnished)
are on the projection at the bottom. At top are a pelican, a hare,
and a beast with bushy tail.
The peacock suggests St Augustine’s Canterbury: but the book
is not in that catalogue.
Numbers has a deer. In the Psalter the Nocturnes, and also
Ps. li and ci are distinguished by initials. In most there is a remark-
able sameness : a dragon bent backwards, and certain convolutions
of foliage occur in three quarters of them.
With Prov. we come to a different style. The initial to this is
in gold, and has very delicate white patterns on the ground. But
the next are of the former type.
Phil, has the design of the three hares, head to head, with only
three ears between them. It is the last of any interest.
