on to the margin horizontally very often. Line fillings are
largely in red and blue outline; gold often occurs also. They
are as a rule simply decorative without animal forms or
heraldic devices. The beginnings of the earlier nocturnes
have been removed.
In the lower margin of 14 a is a shield or a cross gules (Earl of
Norfolk). On 16 a another gu. six crescents 3. 2. 1 or.
Another scribe seems to have written part of 43, 44.

pink and blue. Initials. Above, Jonah nude handed out of
ship into fish’s mouth: two men in the ship, one with steer-
ing paddle. Weathercock on mast. Below, Nineveh, walled
city. In front Jonah emerges from fish’s mouth and grasps
tree on R.
Initial continued into lower border.
f. 66. Exultate Deo. White capitals on pink and blue grounds framed
in gold. Initial, a young tonsured cleric in red over blue
sits cross-legged in an arm-chair playing with two hammers
on 13 bells (blue, on red ground).
f. 79 b. Cantaie Domino. Gold capitals on blue and pink. Initial,
three clerks singing at desk. The nearest is in red cope over
alb and has a white hood with embroidered border. The
others vested in red and blue. Border on three sides, cusped.
f. 81A Domine. exaudi. White capitals on pink and blue. Initial,
young clerk cross-legged in arm-chair opens book on desk;
good border.
f. 95 b. Full page, frame of blue, patterned, with red squares at
corners. Ground gold. Head of Christ: pink nimbus with
gold cross, pink collar edged with blue: light brown wavy
hair, and slight beard. Very careful work.
On 96 a French rubric ; Le apostoile innocente I fit icest confir-
mament I a tuz iceus ki cest orisun / dient en bon entenciun.
Quarante iurs de pardun auerunt (auera) ki chescun ior le
dira. / Deus cent iurs et quarante / la semeine iad de rente.

Lord seated full face with open book blessing: cross-
nimbus : elaborate throne: globe (divided) between His
feet. Good partial border.
111 b. Ad dominum. Has large initial, gold on silver.
128 b. Cantica. Confitebor. Initial, has small figure of Isaiah beard-
less with book.
f. 141 is in another hand. It has the end of Quicunque vult and
beginning of the Litany, in which the invocations of saints
have been obliterated with ink but are still legible. They
end imperfectly in the Martyrs Stephane, Clemens, JVlex-
ander, Laurenti, Vincenti, Georgi, Corneli.
