CATALOGUE OF MANUSCRIPTS

[371-

Fac modo virtutes imitetur et ille paternas
Et regat hoc regnum cum seniore senex.
Evidently referring to the same image of the Holy Child that
is mentioned on f. i b as given by the Duke of Aquitaine to
Henry I. The Arthur is Prince Arthur, son of Henry VII.
The pilgrimage to the Child of Grace was quite a popular one.
16. Catonis Disticha Gallice by Everard . . . . . 123
A fresh hand.
Catun esteit paen
Et ne saueit ren. de crestien lei
...priez sanz ensoigne
Pur euerard le moine. Ke cest out’rane aprent prouidezzc’

Rubric. Cum animaduerterem quam plurimos homines
The Latin text is intercalated in rubric throughout.
Ends i3o«: O deu eient part
Et de peccheur euera(r)d: eit damne deu merci
Rubric. Explicit hie cato qui dixit talia nato
Si mea persequeris carmina: doctor eris.
See Hist. Litt. XIII. 67-70. The author is there identified, I do
not see why, with Everardus Scotus, canon of Kirkham and
abbot of Holm Cultram, c. 1145, who is mentioned by
Dempster (Tanner, and Hardy, II. 225) as having written
lives of Scottish saints.
17. ‘A phebo phebe’ in Latin and French (Alanus de Insulis,
ccx. 581) . . . . . . . ■ • • 130 b
The Latin is here in black, the French in red.
A phebo phebe lumen capit a sapiente
Insipiens sensum quo quasi luce micat.
Nil aliud nisi se ualet ardens enna cremare
Sic se non alios inuidus igne coquit.
La fame prent clarte del soleil
E li nient sage aprent sen del sage
Enna ne put rien arder for li meimes
Ne li enuius ne put a nul nure for a sei.
Ends: Stratus humi non surgit item dum poplite flexo
Portat honus graue quo precipitatur equus
Sic homo qui magna uiciorum mole grauatur
Non nisi deposita mole leuare potest.
Le cheual ki portet grant fes si il chet il ne put mie
Bien leuer deskes le fes seit oste (unfinished)
