ANDREA DEL SARTO. 81
pies of Andrea del Sarto which are in England.
At Panshanger there is a very fine portrait of
Andrea del Sarto by himself: he is represented as
standing by a table at which he has been writing,
and looking up from the letter which lies before
him : the figure is half-length, and the countenance
noble, but profoundly melancholy. One might
fancy that he had been writing to his wife.
The illustration represents Joachim, the father
of the Virgin Mary, at the moment he presents
himself to make his offering in the Temple. On
this occasion, according to the story, the priests
drove him away with ignominy because he was
childless. It is a scene frequently painted by the
early masters.
